Please tell me you’ve been there, too. Overwhelmed by all the information “out there” regarding your health.
Should I skip breakfast every day or eat breakfast every day to lose weight?
Should I weigh myself once a day, once a week, or maybe even never?
Is fluoride toothpaste the only kind of toothpaste that cleans your teeth, or is it toxic to your body?
Are vaccines keeping us safe from debilitating diseases or causing autism?
Am I going to get cancer if I don’t eat organic veggies, or is the word organic just a marketing ploy?
I’m not saying these questions aren’t important. I’m not saying we shouldn’t discuss and carefully consider them. What I am saying is this: it is so overwhelming!!!
And sometimes when things get overwhelming, we just sit there and do nothing. Paralyzed. Worrying that if we make a decision, we’ll make the wrong one and just mess ourselves up all the more.
I get it. I’ve been there.
But then there are things about your health that you want to change, you know you need to change, but after all the worrying (or maybe just throwing it alllll out the window) there’s no brain space left to actually make some simple, measurable progress toward a healthier you.
So here’s my advice. Ready? We’re about to go deep here…
Just do one thing. Something easy. Something measurable, attainable, achievable every day, preferably in the morning.
Wanna know what my “one thing” has been in 2016? Every morning, before I can have any coffee, I drink a big glass of water. That’s it, folks! I drink some water.
Because this home-birthing, fermented cod liver oil drinking, coconut oil pulling, apple cider vinegar shot doing crunchy girl can do all those other “crazy” things, like every single day, but when it comes to just drinking some water, she can’t seem to follow through. (And, yes, I am sure that, most of the time, I’m at least a little dehydrated. I’ve peed in a cup enough times to prove it, people.)
So…when I was thinking of what I should do in 2016 to really amp up my health, and I wanted something that I could stick with, I decided to drink a glass of water! Easy! Attainable! I’m highly motivated by that morning cup o’ joe! After just a few days, I started noticing how much better I was feeling each morning. Not that I felt bad before, just better now.
And ya know what else? I started making healthier choices throughout my day without any extra thought, motivation, or brain power required!
See, many psychologists believe that we really only have so much “will power” every day. If everything you do all day requires will power, you will, likely, get off to a great start and then start to dwindle as the day goes on. (It can be exhausting being your own mini cheerleader in your head all day long!)
So, make one good choice. Make it early on in the day, but make it an easy one that doesn’t require much of your will power reserves, and watch the motivation that comes from that one good, positive choice turn into other good choices later in the day without depleting your will power reserves by the time lunch rolls around. I find I make a healthier choice for breakfast, which often turns into a healthier choice for lunch, which might turn into another big glass of water in the afternoon, etc. (And, hey, it doesn’t always work out perfectly, but it sure does more days than it doesn’t!)
