Looking for natural assistance for your seasonal allergies? This DIY essential oil allergy recipe is my favorite, easy blend using common and inexpensive essential oils.
It seems like all I have to do is flip the calendar to May, and my allergy season begins! Is anyone else with me?
As a kid, I never had a single allergy. I had no clue what some people suffer (and for some people, more than one season!). And then, after college, I moved to Michigan. And I got lambasted. My eyes were so red and itchy that I could hardly wear my contacts anymore. It felt like a yucky, months-long cold! What the heck?
A little over a year later, we moved to Colorado, and my allergies were still present (although not quite as bad). I had hoped the move would solve the problem!
My Switch to Natural Remedies
A few years later, I began working at a chiropractic wellness center, and we had an allergy department. Seeing as treatments were completely free, I decided to give them a whirl! If you can find a BAX treatment center near you, I’d totally recommend it! (They treat all kinds of allergies–food, environmental, etc.)
After my treatments, I went from three months of Zyrtec to three weeks! Amazing! I was doing so much better.
And then I had a late-spring baby, and LactMed mentioned that a nursing mama taking Zyrtec could lead to a sleepy baby! That might sound great to some people, but Landon was already a little too sleepy from jaundice and having some difficulties nursing (which tired him out so much). I decided I’d rather be sneezing than deal with more baby troubles.
So, I ditched my Zyrtec and asked an essential oil friend for her recommendation. She gave me this essential oil allergy recipe. I don’t think she made it up. I think it’s been around for quite a while, and I can’t properly attribute it to the original author.
I’ve seen some other essential oil allergy blends floating around Pinterest, but they’re more complicated. This one is simple and uses fairly inexpensive essential oils.
Crunchy Q&A…
Where do you get your essential oils?
I buy mine from doTERRA. I would also definitely recommend Young Living. In my opinion, both companies are highly reputable as far as quality goes (although each company definitely has their devotees that will tell you why they’re better!). However, they are probably the most expensive essential oil companies around.
I liked this post that goes into what to look for when shopping for essential oils. I’d be really interested to try out Rocky Mountain Oils, as I do believe you’re paying a bit (too much?) for the name when you buy from Young Living or doTERRA. Also, another friend of mine recommends Hopewell Essential Oils, which I may try as well.
What other supplies will I need?
You’ll need a carrier oil and a roller bottle. A carrier oil is any vegetable oil to which you can add the drops of essential oils. It allows the oils to mix together (hence the word “blend”) and dilutes them a bit (they’re quite powerful all on their own). Fractionated coconut oil is popular. I also really like sweet almond oil.
A roller bottle allows you to apply the essential oils very easily. You simply roll them right onto your skin! You can purchase them on Amazon.
Now what do I do with it?
I love to apply my allergy blend to my temples and right under my nose. Yes, you’re smelling them quite a bit, but I don’t mind the smell. Also, I think it’s worth mentioning that I never wanted to be one of those people that smells like essential oils all the time. While I generally find that I use them more when I’m home anyway, I don’t think they’re so strong that you’d be counted as an “oil” person.
How often can I use it?
I’d say, as often as you like to or need to! I definitely apply them when I’m symptomatic (read: having a sneezing fit!). However, I also like to apply them at night before bed or if I’m going outside (or just came in!). I love that you don’t have to worry about overdosing. With my Zyrtec, I could only take it once a day which was fairly easy to remember, but not helpful if I was particularly symptomatic due to a lot of outdoor activity or whatnot.
